What a long wait for Indonesian Laruku fans since their introductory début as a musician that fill a theme song in a famous Japanese Anime airing in Indonesia, Rurouni Kenshin. The japanese Super Band will perform at Lapangan Senayan, Jakarta &#8211; May 2nd 2012 starting from 08.00 PM. <p>To me, this is just like a dream comes true. I remember, ten years ago I was dreaming of watching their concert live in Japan. However, I couldn&#8217;t manage to catch their live performance even during my previous one year stay in japan and the subsequence visit two year after. Therefore, this &#8220;might be once in a lifetime&#8221; chance  really cannot be missed.  I gave my full effort in getting the ticket as soon as possible because as expected, the ticket were sold fast. Fortunately I already got the ticket <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>This concert will never be possible to happen without the great effort from Indonesian Laruku fan base community &#8211; L&#8217;Arc en Ciel Indonesia (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/larcencielindonesia">http://www.facebook.com/larcencielindonesia</a>). Although Indonesia has a very big fan base, the community could unite those aspiration and probably this makes Laruku spot Indonesian fan interest in their live performance and finally decided to put Indonesia as one of their 2012 World Tour destination.</p>
<p>Now,, just wait for the D-Day of the first L&#8217;Arc en Ciel performance in Indonesia. See you L&#8217;Arc en Ciel <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Akhir-akhir ini saya sedang asik membaca sebuah buku berjudul &#8220;Brain Rules &#8211; 12 Kedahsyatan Otak di Tempat Kerja, Sekolah, dan Rumah&#8221; karya John Medina, seorang profesor di bidang Rekayasa Biologi di Universitas Washington. Buku ini sangat menarik bagi saya karena memberikan jawaban atas berbagai kebingungan yang saya rasakan mengenai bagaimana otak bekerja dan bagaimana ia mempengaruhi kehidupan kita sehari-hari.</p>

<p>Buku ini menjelaskan cara kerja otak melalui penjelasan terhadap 12 aturan otak. Aturan-aturan otak dimulai dari Aturan Pertama berupa bagaimana olahraga mendongkrak kemampuan otak dan diakhiri dengan Aturan ke-12 berupa Manusia adalah penjelajah yang kuat dan alami. Tiap aturan menjelaskan bagaimana otak bekerja, faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya, dan bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap pribadi kita.</p>
<p>Sebagai contoh Aturan otak yang dijelaskan dalam buku ini adalah bagaimana ingatan terdiri dari ingatan jangka pendek dan jangka panjang. Buku ini menjelaskan bahwa ingatan jangka pendek dan jangka panjang disimpan di bagian yang berbeda pada otak kita. Selain itu, proses menyimpan ingatannya pun berbeda sehingga metode mengingat ingatan jangka panjang dan pendek menjadi berbeda. Buku ini menekankan perlunya informasi disampaikan secara bertahap dan mengulanginya dalam jeda waktu yang terpola agar informasi tersebut bisa disimpan dalam ingatan jangka panjang.</p>
<p>Contoh lainnya adalah aturan otak tentang tidur. Buku ini mendobrak anggapan kita tentang tidur. Tidur bukanlah untuk mengistirahatkan otak seperti yang umumnya kita anggap selama ini karena pada kenyataanya selama tidur otak kita tetap bekerja dan melakukan proses pemikiran yang berkali lipat lebih cepat dibanding pada saat kita terbangun. Buku ini memang tidak secara jelas menjelaskan mengapa manusia butuh tidur, tapi buku ini menjelaskan mengapa ide-ide ataupun buah pemikiran yang cemerlang bisa muncul saat kita terbangun dari tidur. Dari bukuini, mungkin kita baru aware tentang fakta bahwa tidur siang selama 26 menit bisa meningkatkan konsentrasi pilot NASA sebesar 34 persen.  Masih banyak fakta-fakta baru yang saya dapat dalam buku ini.</p>
<p>Saya ingin meng highlight suatu aturan otak yang dijelaskan buku ini yaitu bagaimana otak tidak bisa melakukan Multi Tasking karena secara alamiah otak berpusat pada konsep-konsep secara berurutan satu per satu. Multi tasking disini adalah dimana otak memberikan perhatian terhadap berbagai hal sekaligus. Contohnya, multi tasking saat kita melamun atau menelefon ketika menyimak suatu presentasi. Pencurahan perhatian kepada dua hal berbeda ini, dalam buku ini didefinisikan sebagai Multi Tasking. Ini berbeda dengan bagaimana otak mengontrol denyut jantung dan hisapan nafas sementara kita membaca buku atau berbicara.</p>
<p>Dalam kaitannya dengan Multi Tasking, buku ini menekankan bahwa multi tasking jauh mengurangi produktivitas kita karena ada sela setiap kali kita berpindah perhatian dari suatu hal ke hal lain. Studi menunjukan bahwa ketika perhatian kita tersela atau terganggu, waktu untuk menyelesaikan suatu aktivitas menjadi 50 % lebih lama dari waktu biasanya. Bukan hanya itu, tingkat kesalahan juga akan meningkat 50 % lebih banyak dari aktivitas yang perhatiannya tidak tersela. Aturan ini diperkuat dengan contoh mengenai menelefon sambil mengemudi. Di buku ini disebutkan bahwa orang yang berbicara di ponsel sambil mengemudi lebih lambat setengah detik dalam menginjak rem pada keadaan darurat dan lebih lambat untuk kembali ke kecepatan normal setelah suatu keadaan darurat. Selanjutnya, lebih dari 50 % tanda visual yang dilihat pengemudi awas terlewat oleh pengemudi yang sambil berbicara di ponsel.</p>
<p>Masih banyak fakta-fakta lain yang jika dimengerti dan diaplikasikan, bisa meningkatkan kualitas hidup kita baik dalam pekerjaan,  sekolah maupun sosialisasi. Hal yang saya benci dari buku yang diterjemahkan dalam bahasa Indonesia ini adalah cara penulisannya. Kalimat-kalimat dalam buku ini sulit dimengerti entah karena gaya tulis John Medina yang berbelit-belit atau penterjemahan yang kurang sesuai. Terlepas dari hal itu, saya suka dan merekomendasikan buku ini. Selamat menikmati bagi yang tertarik membacanya.</p>

<p>During my second visit to Japan, I have had a chance to visit Tokyo Disney Sea, a part of Tokyo Disney Resort which is one of &#8220;Must See&#8221; place in Japan and based on Wikipedia, it is the 5th most visited theme park in the world (1). The Disney Sea was the fastest theme park in the world to reach the milestone of 10 million guests, having done so in 307 days after its grand opening and also the most expensive theme park ever built, estimated to have cost over U.S. $4 billion. Those reputations were some of the reason why I must visit the Disney Sea.</p>
<p>The ticket price was 6200 Yen for adult (18 years &amp; older), 5300 Yen for 12 &#8211; 17 years old, and 4100 Yen for below 12 years old. It is surely far more expensive<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#000000;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;font-size:13px;line-height:19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#444444;font-family:Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;font-size:14px;line-height:23px;"> than Indonesia newest theme park but it sure worth the price. ( For example : Trans Studio : Rp. 200,000. or 2000 Yen and Disney sea Rp. 620,000. or 6200 Yen). <p>The theme park area is categorized to seven areas which are :</p>
<p><span style="color:#993300;"><strong>1 Mediterranean Harbor</strong></span></p>
<p>Mediterranean Harbor is the entrance &#8220;port-of-call&#8221; and themed as an Italian port city, complete with Venetian gondolas that guests can board and ride. It is very good spot for going out with your lover <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  The surrounding is so romantic and pleasant.</p>
<p>The main purpose of this harbour is as a main stage (or water s<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#000000;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;font-size:13px;line-height:19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#444444;font-family:Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;font-size:14px;line-height:23px;">tage I prefer) for Disney shows such as &#8220;Fantasmic&#8221;. This spectacular shows combines laser, lighting, water spray, Disney figures in a story about the magic of many Disney&#8217;s stories. <p><span style="color:#993300;"><strong>2 Mysterious Island</strong></span></p>
<p>Mysterious Island is a &#8220;port-of-call&#8221; within Mount Prometheus, the giant volcano that is the Park&#8217;s centerpiece and most prominent feature. It relies heavily on the storytelling of Jules Verne and, specifically, the mythology of the volcano fortress mentioned several times in the books called &#8220;Vulcania&#8221;. Two  attractions in this area are &#8220;Journey to the Centre of the Earth&#8221; and  &#8221;20,000 Leagues Under the Sea&#8221;. To me, I like &#8221;Journey to the Centre of the Earth&#8221; ride in this area.</p>

<p>Mermaid Lagoon is home to the characters of The Little Mermaid. The facade is made to look like the Palace of King Triton and features fanciful seashell-<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#000000;font-family:Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;font-size:13px;line-height:19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#444444;font-family:Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;font-size:14px;line-height:23px;">inspired architecture. This &#8220;port of call&#8221; is unique in that it is mostly indoors and recreates the feeling of being underwater.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#993300;"><strong>4 Arabian Coast</strong></span></p>
<p>This &#8220;port of call&#8221;, like Mermaid Lagoon, is themed after a popular Disney animated film, this time Aladdin. <p>Located at the back of the park, the dominant structure in this &#8220;port of call&#8221; is a huge, ruined Central American Aztec pyramid which houses the E.M.V. attraction Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull. The Indiana Jones Adventure ride was my most favourite attraction in the park.</p>

<p>This &#8220;port of call&#8221; is hailed as &#8220;the marina of the future&#8221;. It is sometimes called the &#8220;Tomorrowland&#8221; of Tokyo DisneySea and is somewhat of a cross between the never-built Discovery Bay concept for Disneyland and Discoveryland in Disneyland Park (Paris).</p>
<p><span style="color:#993300;"><strong>7 American Waterfront</strong></span></p>
<p>This &#8220;port of call&#8221; represents the northeastern seaboard of the United States in the early 20th century. It features two themed areas, an &#8220;Old Cape Cod&#8221; section, and a &#8220;New York Harbor&#8221; section with an elaborate backstory.</p>

<p>I spent 12 hours in the park <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  The crowd was so huge that so many main attractions offered queue up to 2.5 hours each ride. If I may advice you, come not in a holiday session,  come in a week day so you can have less queue and you can enjoy many ride as many you can.</p>
<p>The disney resort, especially the Disney Sea really offers a day of dream for me and I am sure for many other visitor. The surrounding are  designed in detail to fulfilll our expectation of a Disney dream world. What really amazed me was the warm smile and gesture of Disney Sea staff. They really showed their spirit in doing their best to makes us feel like living in a dream world. This is a part of Japanese culture in doing their best for any responsibility they bear, I think.</p>
<p>Finally, I really recommend you to visit this theme park if you have a chance. It is very worth the price and provides you uniqueness compared to other Disney theme parks. Some snapshots during my visit can be seen in the gallery. Enjoy )</p>

<p>The first time I went to Japan was during my student exchange activity in 2008 to 2009. That was my first oversea travel experience in which I spent 1 year plus 4 days in the country to study about concrete technology as well as Japanese Culture. I am really happy that after more than 2 years of wondering on when can I get back here, I was able to return to Japan.</p>
<p>This time, I will stay for less than two weeks. I was invited by SISF to attend their anniversary ceremony in Tokyo. I was one from several oversea students that were granted transportation support from country of origin to Japan.  What a very good chance since I can also visit my relative and my previous lab in Tokyo Tech.</p>
<p>There are many places I haven&#8217;t explored during my first stay in Japan. Hopefully I can managed to visit all of the &#8216;unexplored&#8217; list items although the summer weather is very hot here. Also, I am doing Fasting because now is muslim holy month of Ramadhan. Those make travelling during daytime very tiring and exhausting. However, I don&#8217;t know when will I able to visit Japan again so I will do my best!! Lets Enjoy Japan!!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Offshore platform has been used in oil and gas industry as early as 1930 in Venezuela. The first offshore platform was made by wood material. The steel type platform was then used in 1947 in a 6 m depth of water in the Gulf of Mexico. Since that period, various types of offshore platform has been developed and used as main offshore facility in oil and gas industry. Offshore platform can be used in many ways. A full offshore oil and gas facility can have many platforms such as quarters platform, wellhead platform, process platform, compressor platform, etc.</p>
<p>Type of structure and the support configuration of offshore platform are in consideration with depth and difficulties in erecting the platform. Therefore, there are many types of offshore platform. Based on the type of structure, offshore platform can be divided as :</p>
<ul>
<li>Concrete gravity platform</li>
<li>Fixed steel platform</li>
<li>Semi submersible platform</li>
<li>Tension leg platform</li>
<li>Guyed tower platform</li>
</ul>

<p>In addition to that classification, depending on the number of legs &amp; jacket type, fixed offshore platform can be divided into :</p>
<ul>
<li>Monopod platform</li>
<li>Bipod platform</li>
<li>Tripod platform</li>
<li>4, 6, or 8 pile platform</li>
</ul>
<p>A common offshore platform is consisted of platform deck, jacket, and pile. Deck is the place where all production equipments are placed. Jacket is a tubular steel structure that serves as a lateral load support for the platform while pile serves as a vertical load support. For come cases, jacket is not used because the lateral load of platform is neglect able.</p>
<p>In a common Offshore platform, deck, jacket, and pile are fabricated onshore. The first stage of platform erection is transporting the jacket and putting it in the designated place. After the jacket is fixed in the right place, pile is driven via the jacket hollow tube to the sea bed. Finally, the deck part is placed and connected at the top of support structure.</p>
<p>For safety and ergonomic reasons, platform layout should be carefully designed. Platform north should be facing to deeper water. This north part is also used as the area for jack up drilling rig and foundations spud can or mat. The south side platform is used for boat berthing, pipeline riser and subsea pipeline. Layout of platform should also be designed by considering drilling sequence, prevailing wind, and other utility such as helipad.</p>
<p>Load acting on platform is vital in a platform’s design stage. In designing a platform, load can be divided to load at deck structure and load at jacket structure. In general, the working load in an offshore platform consisted of the following load.</p>
<p>Load at Deck structure:</p>
<ul>
<li>Topside load : Deck structure, piping, equipment, life load, crane load, helicopter load, drilling work over load.</li>
<li>Lateral load : Wind and earthquake.</li>
</ul>
<p>Load at Jacket structure:</p>
<ul>
<li>Vertical load : Deck structure and buoyancy</li>
<li>Lateral load : Wind, wave, current, earthquake, and added hydrodynamic mass.</li>
</ul>

<p>My favorite band in the world, L&#8217;arc en CIel, will held a 20th anniversary concert on 28 &amp; 29 May 2011. The two days concert will trace the 20 years of band history by playing songs from &#8220;Dune&#8221; to &#8220;Heart&#8221; album on the first day and &#8220;Ark &amp; Ray&#8221; to &#8220;KISS&#8221; album on the second day. The ticket price is 9000 yen or around USD 110.  The live will be held in Ajinomoto Stadium with total capacity around 50,000 peoples (or even more for concert arrangement). FYI, the ticket for both days of concert is already sold out in just one day.</p>
<p>The greatest thing of this concert is that the will donate all concert revenue for the victim of recent Japan Tohoku earth quake. They also planned to reduce the electricity usage in the concert. What a noble thing that we have to also kept in our heart. That&#8217;s my fave band is <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Eventhough I have stayed in Japan for one year, I&#8217;ve never been to their concert. They were at &#8216;resting&#8217; stage when I came to Japan. What a regret for me because seeing their live is one of my dream. As for this concert, to me, the ticket price is really a small price for taking part in a this Japan&#8217;s legendary band history. Unfortunately, the transportation cost from Indonesia to Japan is far higher than the ticket price&#8230;. I cant afford T_T poor me.. haha</p>
<p>But anyway.. they will always be my fave band.. I started to listened their songs 10 years ago.. and I still like their song, performance, and attitude.. Hopefully I still get a chance to see their live in the near future&#8230; wish me luck <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been assigned for a month and half to escort tug construction project for LNG ship berthing.  It doesn&#8217;t have a close relation with civil engineering role but I still can apply the principal knowledge in construction management learned during my study in ITB. Actually, it is really interesting to be able to involved to this project. From project management to naval architect, my zero years of work experience really forced me to understand how the field world is going and how I can cope with it. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Saya memang bukan orang yang suka pelajaran sejarah. Bahkan, semenjak SD hingga SMA saya tidak pernah menunjukan antusiasme yang tinggi dalam mempelajari mata pelajaran Sejarah. Tidak pernah saya menemukan <em>passion</em> yang tinggi dalam menelusuri uraian-uraian sejarah seperti <em>passion</em> saya dalam memecahkan soal kalkulus atau fisika dasar. Koleksi buku pribadi saya pun tidak ada yang berkaitan dengan sejarah. Singkatnya, mempelajari sejarah tidak pernah menempati posisi utama dalam prioritas minat saya.</p>
<p>Namun, tidak untuk kali ini. Dalam satu bulan terakhir saya tersihir oleh sebuah buku yang mengulas  konflik paling berdarah dalam sejarah umat manusia, Perang Dunia 2. Di waktu luang selepas bekerja, saya selalu menyempatkan untuk membaca halaman per halaman dari buku ini. Sebuah deviasi dari kurangnya minat saya pada pelajaran sejarah.</p>

<p><strong>Perang Eropa</strong>, itulah nama bukunya. Buku yang merupakan kumpulan tulisan berseri yang ditulis oleh P.K. Ojong SH dan diterbitkan dalam majalah mingguan <em>Star Weekly</em> (Djakarta) ini telah menjadi salah satu mahakarya penulis Indonesia dalam topik sejarah perang dunia kedua. Terdiri dari 3 jilid, buku jilid pertama dicetak pertamakali pada pada bulan Juli 2003 dan buku yang saya dapat sudah merupakan cetakan ketujuh, 2008.</p>
<p>Buku <strong>Perang Eropa Jilid 1</strong> mengisahkan awal dari pecahnya peperangan di Eropa hingga pendaratan Sekutu di Afrika Utara. Buku ini dibuka dengan kisah seputar <em>Blitzkrieg</em> yang merupakan strategi perang cepat Jerman yang dengannya berhasil mendominasi daratan Eropa. <em>Blitzkrieg</em> disokong dengan senjata rising star kala itu, tank, sehingga keberadaan berlapis baja ini memberikan perspektif baru mengenai perang yang mengandalkan kecepatan dan senjata moderen. Lewat strategi ini, Jerman dibawah pimpinan Hitler mampu menguasai polandia,  perancis, belanda, Yunani, afrika utara, dan wilayah Eropa lainnya dalam kurun waktu 3 tahun saja.</p>
<p>Buku ini juga membahas kehidupan Adolf Hitler, sang pemimpin Jerman pada kala itu. Melalui buku ini saya bisa memahami bagaimana kharisma Hitler bisa membuat warga Jerman terbuai pada mimpi kejayaan Jerman yang Agung. Semua mimpi itu sudah terwujud ketika Hitler kecil menunjukan bakat memimpin dan mempengaruhi teman-temannya, meskipun, secara akademik kepintarannya tidak menonjol.</p>
<p>Pembahasan perang dunia ke 2 terus belanjut ke peperangan di lautan. Buku ini menceritakan bagaimana kapal-kapal selam Jerman, U-Boat, menjadi kekuatan yang paling ditakuti di laut Atlantik.  Superioritasnya di laut atlantik didukung dengan kapal bajak laut, <em>pocket battleship, </em>dan bahkan kapal tempur terbesar di dunia kala itu, <em>Bismarck</em>. Menyelami setiap halaman buku ini, kita bisa melihat dinamika kekuatan armada laut dunia yang berpusat pada 3 poros, Inggirs, Amerika, dan Jerman.</p>
<p>Buku ini juga membahas kiprah tentara sekutu &#8211; Jerman di afrika utara yang oleh stalin disebut sebagai &#8220;perut buaya&#8221;. Istilah ini digunakan karena sekutu menganggap front perang selat channel sangat sulit ditembus dan begitu ganas sehingga diasosiasikan sebagai mulut buaya. Sedangkan front utara eropa yang meliputi norwegia, denmark, dan sekitarnya juga memiliki pertahanan yang sangat kuat seperti kulit punggung buaya. Oleh karena front selatan Eropa terdapat Spanyol dan Italia yang relatif kurang kuat dibanding front lainnya, Sekutu memutuskan untuk menusuk Jerman dari sisi ini.</p>
<p>Hal menarik yang dibahas dari buku ini adalah kiprah jenius-jenius militer seperti Erwin Rommel (The Desert Fox), Von Mainstein dari Jerman dan Zhukov dari Rusia yang memegang peranan penting dalam front Timur, juga Eisenhower, George Patton, Bradley, dan Montgomery yang berkuasa di front Barat. Keberadaan mereka menunjukan bahwa perang adalah sebuah seni yang sayangnya juga merupakan suatu tragedi terburuk bagi umat manusia.</p>
<p>Kepemimpinan, semangat perjuangan, dan pengendalian diri adalah beberapa poin yang saya dapat dari buku ini. Saya merasakan bagaimana frustasinya Jenderal-jenderal perang jerman dalam perang yang bukan karena kuatnya musuh yang dihadapi, tapi beratnya mempertahankan prinsip mereka terhadap kediktatoran Hitler. Buku ini secara ineksplisit menyatakan bahwa jika Hitler lebih mendengarkan Jenderal-jenderalnya, mungkin Jerman yang akan keluar menjadi pemenang Perang Dunia Kedua. Namun itulah masa lalu yang bisa kita pelajari nilai-nilainya untuk kita aplikasikan di masa kini.</p>
<p>Setelah membaca buku ini, saya semakin bersyukur bisa hidup di masa dan di lingkungan yang damai. Masa dimana jiwa raga digunakan untuk pembangunan umat manusia, bukan pengembangan senjata penghancur seperti perang dunia lalu.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On 17 and 18th January 2011 I attended a geotechnical short course held by Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) UK in Kuala   Lumpur, Malaysia. The course focuses on practical design approach to geotechnical engineering in the tropical environment. There were three renowned facilitator in this course which are Dr. Laurie Wesley, Mike Dobie and Nick Shirlaw. All three speakers have extensive experience working in Southeast Asia.</p>
<p>Nick Shirlaw has has over 35 years of experience, mostly in underground construction. He has worked on several major subway projects, including the Tsuen Wan and Island Lines in Hong Kong, Phase 1 and 2 of the Singapore MRT system, the Taipei TRTS, the Rapid Transit Expansion Program in Toronto and the North-East, Circle and Downtown lines in Singapore. He is a Director of Golder Associates (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., and is a part time lecturer on underground construction at the National University of Singapore.</p>

<p>The interesting thing is that Dr Wesley and Mike Dobie are really familiar with Indonesia geotechnical situation. They have plenty of experiences working in Indonesia. Dr. Wesley has worked both in Indonesia and Malaysia and has published two books recently on residual soils. He will publish his book in Bahasa Indonesia this year.</p>

<p>Mike Dobie office is in Jakarta, Indonesia. Locally he is a Member of HATTI (Indonesian Geotechnical Society), and Vice President of the Indonesian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (INA-IGS). He has been a member of ICE (UK Institution of Civil Engineers) since 1978, getting involved in the activities of the Jakarta Local Association soon after moving to Indonesia where he has been a committee member, secretary, treasurer and chairman. He is currently the Indonesia Country Representative of ICE.</p>

<p>The two days short course offers eight sessions of lecture which are :</p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>1. Geotechnical Engineering in Residual Soils &#8211; Dr. Laurie Wesley</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">This lecture briefly introduce the geotechnical properties of residual soils.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>2. Slope Stability in Residual Soils &#8211; Dr. Laurie Wesley</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">This lecture examines and discusses a number of factors that make slope stabilityassessments, and slope engineering in residual soils somewhat different from sedimentary soils.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>3. Comments on the Use Of Clay in Geosynthetic Reinforced Retaining Walls &#8211; Dr. Laurie Wesley</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">There are issues involved in the use of clay that need to be recognised and taken into account indesigning reinforced walls with clay fill.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>4. Site Investigation of Soft Soils and Relevance to Design Parameters &#8211; Mike Dobie</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">This lecture introduces and describes site investigation methods for soft soils based onexperience gained in Malaysia on the North South Expressway project, including the practicalapplication of the methods in planning site investigation and carrying out geotechncial design.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>5. The Use of Clay Fills in Reinforced Soil Structures &#8211; Mike Dobie</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">Clay fills are frequently used in the construction of reinforced soil structures, but there frequentlyappear to be misconceptions about the behaviour and performane of clay fills in thesecircumstances. This presentation outlines the behaviour of clay fills during placement, compactionand later use.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>6. Reinforced Soil Structures &#8211; Some Important Observations Concerning Design and Performance &#8211; Mike Dobie</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">Reinforced soil structures have become widely used over the last 25 years to build steepened slopes, retaining walls and bridge abutments. The lecture introduce some experiences and information gained during this time.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>7. Selection of tunnelling methods for residual soils, saprolites and weathered rocks &#8211; Nick Shirlaw</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">The Lecture  focuses on the experience of different tunnelling methods in residual soil, saprolite, and mixed ground conditions comprising therock and soil grades of weathered rock. The application of these methods has depended on theprecise nature of the ground conditions and the length of the particular drive.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#808080;"><strong>8. Assessment of face pressures for tunnelling in residual soils and saprolites &#8211; Nick Shirlaw</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#000000;">For tunnelling is necessary to decide whether it is necessary to apply pressure at the face, either to avoid collapse (ULS case) or the control settlement (SLS case). If a pressure is required, the magnitude of that pressure has to be assessed. The lecture review some of the methods that can be used to assess the required pressure.</span></p>

<p>The course was given in practician point of view. The information provided were based on the lecturer rich experience on their previous work. This is very relevant with my current role in the company where we do engineering in purpose of solving real life problems that needs immediate treatment. I hope they will held the same course in Indonesia next time.</p>
